Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, who runs United Nigeria Airlines, wants to become the next governor of Anambra State. He made this announcement on Friday at his hometown in Ogidi, where he also set up his initial campaign team. He’ll be running with the APC political party in the election scheduled for November 8.

Okonkwo says he thought long and hard about this decision and talked with many people before deciding to run. He believes Anambra has great potential – it’s full of hardworking business people and strong citizens. However, he thinks poor leadership has held the state back from reaching its full potential.

“The pains and horror of insecurity have left our people living in the bondage of fear. People earnestly cry for real security and progress,” he said during his announcement.

“With a deep sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment to the future of our dear Anambra State, today I declare my intention to contest the forthcoming governorship election.”

“I believe Anambra deserves the best. Together, we can build a state that truly works for everyone; a state where governance is about service to the people and not to self.”

If elected, Okonkwo plans to focus on making the state safer, growing the economy, creating jobs, and improving roads and other infrastructure. He also wants to strengthen education, develop agriculture, advance technology, teach new skills, and change people’s mindsets for the better.

He sees his campaign as more than just politics – it’s about getting Anambra moving forward again. He made it clear he needs public support, saying: “I cannot do it alone. I need your support; together, we can make Anambra a shining example of excellence and good governance.”

Okonkwo promised to take special care of young people, women, and vulnerable groups. He wants to make Anambra successful and safe enough to compete globally. “No society can thrive without security and accountable leadership,” he said, promising to work with security forces and start community policing programs.
