PDP not in merger talks with any political party – Ologunagba

Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied being in merger talks with any political party in the country.

Debo Ologunagba, PDP national publicity secretary, stated this in a statement after the 587th meeting of the party’s national working committee (NWC), which was held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Ologunagba, “We restate for the umpteenth time that the PDP is not engaged in any merger, fusion or amalgamation talks with any other political party or interest.”

The party’s position is coming amid growing speculations that it is working with the Labour Party (LP) to form a coalition with other parties as part of its plans to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2027.

“Although the PDP, as a true people’s party, is open and welcoming to all Nigerians, including our former members who left for other parties, we state that our party remains strong and formidable, capable of winning elections in a free, fair and transparent electoral process in our country,” he said.

The PDP recently embarked on membership drives opening its registers at the ward levels across the 774 local governments. The exercise which is billed to end in August this year, will also prepare it for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections in September.

“The party, therefore called on members of the public, teeming members of our great party, democratic institutions and, of course, the international community to disregard any report suggesting any form of merger between the PDP and any other political party. Such is not in the contemplation of our great party,” Ologunagba said.
