Candidates participating in the upcoming Saturday Ondo state governorship election, have signed a pact to ensure violence-free election and accept outcome of the exercise.
Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); Eyitayo Jegede of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP); Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and 13 other candidates on Tuesday, signed the accord facilitated by the National Peace Committee.
The signing was witnessed by National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Yakubu Mahmood; Sultan of Sokoto, Abukabar Saa’d; Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Hassan Kukah; former Bishop of Abuja Diocese, John Onaiyekan; traditional rulers, among others.
Governor Akeredolu, who is seeking for second term, recalled that previous elections in the state had been peaceful and noted that the Saturday’s poll would also be peaceful.
He however urged the people to keep away from violence, assuring the people that the three major candidates, whom he said, are colleagues would also meet to discuss on how to ensure peace reign before, during and after the election.
The governor therefore, appealed to INEC to ensure that the election is free, fair and credible.
Also speaking, the PDP candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, called on the Police and other security agencies to be neutral in the discharge of their duties during the election.
He urged the security agencies, especially the Police to arrest and prosecute anyone who foment troubles during the election
The ZLP candidate, Agboola Ajayi, who is also the deputy governor of the state, assured that members of his party would respect the accord signed.
