Water scarcity hits Lokoja

…residents urged government to provide temporary alternative

Residents of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, are again witnessing scarcity of potable water scarcity .

Residents who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday appealed to the Kogi State government to come to their rescue and find lasting solution to the problem.

At Gadumo , a suburb of the state capital , those who spoke with our correspondent described the scarcity of water in the area as a development that is fast becoming a recurring issue with social , health and economic implications.

The area was hit by the scarcity of such an essential commodity about two weeks ago.

Mohammed Saqir , the General Manager , kogyi State Water Board, in a statement attributed the scarcity to low voltage on the power supply and promised that efforts were on to salvage the issue.

Two days after Sagir’s promise, the water returned but this was Short lived as the state capital again experience yet another phase of scarcity of drinkable water.

Effort to speak with the General Manager, Kogi State Water Board, Mohammed Sagir, on Sunday concerning the recent development proved abortive .

However, a reliable source at the water board, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, described the problem as going from bad to worse, citing finance as one of the major factors responsible for the scarcity.

Speaking on the issue, they called on the state government to take a second look at its recent freezing of state government accounts, adding that government agencies that have direct bearing on life of the public from policy that would enable the residents have funds to operate , pending when the policy would be lifted.

They also called on the state government to create temporary or alternative funding arrangement for such agencies to meet their aims and objectives for the benefit of the people.
