A tragic incident occurred Friday morning in Lagos as a truck fell on a Nissan car in motion and killed instantly a woman who was seated at the rear of the car with a registration number, ABJ 692 BG. The driver of the ill-fated car survived unhurt.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement, said the driver of the fully loaded 40-feet Mack articulated truck ran away with his assistant immediately the accident occurred at Alapere, Ogudu along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, said that preliminary investigations into the accident showed the driver of the truck, who was on a high speed, lost control as a result of a brake failure and rammed into the Nissan car by NNPC.
Taofiq quoted LASTMA officer, Alabi Olukayode of Zone 2, Ogudu/Alapere, as saying that the agency handed over the evacuated dead woman to police men from Alapere Police Station.
“LASTMA officials and passers-by, including the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) were involved in the rescue operations. Other emergency responders at the scene of the accident were Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the police,” Olukayode added.
He said that LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA Director of Traffic Incidents, Event Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance Hakeem Adeosun and the LASTMA rescue team were also at the accident scene.
Bakare-Oki was reported to have warned the motoring public, particularly truck drivers, to stop over- speeding and ensure their vehicles were properly checked, especially the braking system, before embarking on any journey within or outside the state.
