UPDATED: Senate passes N70k minimum wage bill into law

Tinubu assures of better economy, hails NBS reports on balance of trade

The Nigerian Senate has passed the N70,000 minimum wage bill.

The Bill speedily passed first , second and third reading on Tuesday and now awaits assent into law by President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu in a letter to the Senate, urged the upper chamber to give the bill expeditious consideration and passage.

The Bill seeks amend the 2019 minimum wage to increase the Natuinal Minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 and reduce review interval from five years to three years.

Leading debate on the Bill Bamidele Opeyemi, the Senate leader noted that the new minimum wage is a short term measure to mitigate the situation in country, as efforts are being made for long term solution to bring succor to all citizens.

He urged all lawmakers to support the Bill. The upper chamber presided by Godswill Akoabio reverted into a committee of the whole to consider the bill Clause by clause.

Afterwards, the Senate President put the Bill to a voice vote and all lawmakers supported it.

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the national minimum wage bill to te Senate and asked the upper Chamber to pass the bill.

Tinubu’s request is contained in letters read by Godswill Akpabio, the Senate Leader, durung plenary on Tuesday.

Tinubu urged the National Assembly togie the bill which proposes N70,000 as minimum wage expeditious consideration and passage.
