Private jet with VIPs onboard overshoots runway in Ibadan

Private jet owners sue Customs over N30bn import duty

A private jet carrying 10 people, including several VIPs, narrowly avoided disaster on Friday morning when it overshot the runway at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The plane, with registration number N580KR, skidded off the tarmac and into nearby bushes around 11:00 AM.

Although the incident triggered a scramble for emergency responders, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

“It was a private plane from Abuja,” confirmed Carol Adekotujo, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). “It landed safely but overshot the runway. There was no casualty.”

The cause of the incident is still under investigation, with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) yet to release a statement.

This close call comes just two months after Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu narrowly escaped death when his plane crash-landed at the same airport in November 2023.

The latest incident has raised concerns about safety standards at the Ibadan airport, with questions being asked about runway maintenance and pilot training.

The NSIB investigation is expected to shed light on the cause of the overshoot and make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
