No bomb, only overheated refuse container exploded in Maitama — Police

gas explosion

Authorities have disputed allegations of a bomb explosion in Maitama Abuja, stating that preliminary investigations points to an overheated metal refuse container as the source of the explosion.

The explosion resulted in injuries to two refuse evacuators, who are now receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command and the FCT Federal Emergency Management Agency, refuted claims after the explosion caused panic in the neighborhood.

The incident unfolded at a dump site located outside the Bureau of Public Enterprise premises in Maitama, where an eruption from a heated metallic waste bin created a sudden and sharp noise.

Josephine Adeh, FCT Police spokesperson, issued a statement revealing that a rapid response team and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were swiftly deployed to assess the situation.

Adeh warned residents against using metallic refuse bins and recommended the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal to minimize the risk of similar incidents.

A local resident clarified, “It was not a bomb explosion that occurred at Maitama. The loud noise was caused by an eruption from a metallic waste bin heated by the sun.”

“The police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was dispatched to the scene, restoring calm to the area”.

Similarly, Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Relations for FCT FEMA, confirmed the incident, stating, “Yes, there was an explosion. No casualties. FEMA was on-site, and the FCT police are investigating. It occurred at a dump site.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the overheated metal refuse container, emphasizing public caution and the use of safer alternatives for waste disposal.
