NECO Exams: Independent examiners threaten protest over wages

NECO examiners threaten nationwide protest over delayed payment

The National Examinations Council (NECO) independent examiners who graded candidates in the last examination threatened to protest nationwide over the non-payment of their entitlements after completing the assignment.

The examiners who concluded the marking and grading processes of the 2024 examination papers in August and had the results released in September are not happy that their entitlements have not yet been paid.

This was made known in a letter by the angry Kano examiners directed to Dantani Wushishi, the chief registrar and chief executive officer of NECO at the national headquarters in Minna, Niger state, and circulated to the council’s examiners in Plateau State; in which the aggrieved examiners indicated that efforts have started to mobilise their colleagues across the states for the planned protest.

“It is very appalling that, despite the examinations being marked over three months ago and the release of the candidates’ results over a month ago, the majority of the examiners have yet to receive the wages they are owed for their labourious efforts,” the letter read in part.

In addition, the letter revealed that only an insignificant minority of the examiners has been paid nationwide, and urged the council management to address the abnormality..

“We trust that NECO will take immediate action to rectify this situation and ensure that the examiners are paid without any further delay,” the letter stated.
