Caleb Mutfwang, the Plateau State Governor has condemned in very strong terms, the recent assault on Zurak community in Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area by fleeing bandits on Monday, May 20, 2024.
Recall that gunmen suspected to be bandits in their numbers on Monday evening attacked Zurak and Bankalala village in Bashar District of Wase local government area of Plateau State, killing over 40 residents including vigilantes and injuring others in the process. The death toll as at Wednesday rose to 50, according to a community leader in the area.
Several houses were also razed by the rampaging gunmen in an incident that has thrown the community into agony.
Describing the attack as utterly deplorable and completely unacceptable, Governor Mutfwang expressed deep regret over the tragic loss of innocent lives. He explained that such violence undermines ongoing efforts to secure the safety of residents, especially farmers who are returning to their fields.
The Governor assured the public that security forces have been mobilized to restore order in the affected area and reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding all communities, including the capital city of Jos.
He reafirmed his administration’s determination to proactively address security threats in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, and appealed to the people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
In a statement by Gyang Bere, his Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPA), made available to Journalists Wednesday evening in Jos, Governor Mutfwang extended his condolences to the bereaved families and called for unity among stakeholders to foster dialogue and prevent further incidents. He also solicited the collective support of the citizens in fostering peace and prosperity across the state.
