The Nigerian Legion, the body saddled with the responsibility of taking care of military veterans, has appealed to the Federal Government to improve the members’ welfare package with the present economic reality and hardship in the country.
Benedict Agbogu, the executive chairman of Anambra state of the body told BusinessDay in Awka on Tuesday that the veterans across the country are clamouring for a better welfare package.
He appealed to the Federal Government to step up the welfare package of the veterans to help lessen the economic burden for their families.
“Our hope is that President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly should come to our aid and do something wonderful in the life of the veterans,” Agbogu said.

“We have suffered for this country, we put in our best to serve the nation at our youthful age. Our service to the nation, our heroes past shall not be forgotten, and service to the nation not taken for granted.
“We beliee that the federal government should help us further than what they have done. They’re doing something now, but we pray they step up the action.”
Agbogu commended Chukwuma Soludo, the state governor, for approving six plots of land for the construction of a secretariat in the state.
He, however, called on the state government, philanthropists and well-meaning individuals to support the construction of a state Secretariat to enhance their welfare and activities.
Agbogu emphasized, however, that while the land allocation is appreciated, it was not enough.
He appealed for resources to construct the Secretariat, noting that veterans in other states already have functional facilities.
“We are asking the federal government, state government, philanthropists and government appointees to come to our aid and help us build our Secretariat. It is not enough to allocate land, we need the resources to put up the structure,” he stated.
