Lagos moves against multiple taxation in hospitality sector

To stem multiple taxation in Lagos, the government, on Thursday, announced plans to harmonise tax payments in the state, especially for operators in the hospitality industry.

Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the commissioner for tourism, arts and culture, Abdul Kabir Ogungbo, the special adviser to the governor on tax, and Ayodele Subair, chairman of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), among other officials, disclosed this during an engagement with stakeholders in the hospitality sector.

The event with the theme: “Addressing current industry challenges, exploring emerging trends, understanding policy framework and unveiling collaborative opportunities within the entire hospitality value chain” was organised by the state government.

Addressing the stakeholders, Benson-Awoyinka, said the state government was committed to creating an enabling environment for the hospitality sector to thrive given the pivotal the sector plays in the economic development of the state. She sought the cooperation of stakeholders with her ministry and the policy frameworks of the government to make the sector data-driven with the aid of technology.

“Our policy frameworks are being continually reviewed to ensure they support growth, innovation, and sustainability. We are also focused on improving infrastructure, enhancing security, and promoting Lagos as a prime tourist destination”.

Other officials at the event, including Lanre Mojjola, general manager, Lagos State Safety Commission, and Sola Giwa, the special adviser to the governor on transportation, who were members of a panel discussion on ‘enhancing compliance in the hospitality sector’, stressed the need for corporation among stakeholders.

Ogungbo, the special adviser on taxation, said Governor Sanwo-Olu will soon be unveiling a new platform to harmonise various tax payments which will block all avenues for multiple taxation.
