Police in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, are still trying to figure out why a man and his son were shot dead in the early hours of day.
This is as the police have however arrested some men in the bands that seem to invade the Garden City, carting away accessories of public facilities such as manholes and traffic lights.
Giving explanation, the Rivers State Police Command said it is aware of a tragic incident which occurred on Omuelu Farm Road at Igwuruta-Ali in Obio/Akpor section of the Garden City where one 59-old Timothy who is a chief security officer at the Adokiye Amieseimeka International Stadium in Omagwa in the state capital, and his first son were brutally murdered by unknown gunmen.
The police said the Igwuruta Division of the Rivers State Police Command received a report from Omolara, Timothy’s daughter, stating that four unknown gunmen ambushed her father and son, shooting them severely on the head, resulting in their death.
The police said they swiftly responded to the scene, recovering three expended AK-47 ammunition. “The victims were rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, they succumbed to their injuries and were confirmed dead by the Doctor on duty.”
The police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, said the Commissioner has since directed the deployment of all necessary intelligence to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
She said: “The Rivers State Police Command has been proactive in addressing crime in the state, it is working tirelessly to ensure that justice is served in this recent case.”
The proactivity seemed to have paid in the arrest of vandals from Gombe and Kastina states. The police said the Trans-Amadi Division acting on a credible piece of intelligence, has made a significant breakthrough in combating vandalism with the arrest of two suspects caught vandalizing and attempting to steal NDDC Street Solar Lights along Danjuma Drive, off Trans-Amadi road in Port- Harcourt.

The suspects, Shaibu Yusuf aged 30, said to be an indigene of Bolari Town in Gombe LGA of Gombe State, and Ibrahim Abubakar, aged 28, an indigene of Katsina LGA of Katsina State, are all said to reside at Okuru scrap dump, Abuloma Community, Port- Harcourt.
The police said from the suspects, they recovered Solar Light Poles, Solar Light Panels, Solar Light Panel Bolts, Solar Light Panel Nuts, and a knife.
Koko said: “The arrested suspects confessed to being part of a syndicate responsible for vandalizing and stealing Street Solar Lights and manhole covers in the area.
“The suspects have been charged to court, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate to face justice accordingly.
“This arrest is part of a larger effort to tackle vandalism and theft of Street Solar Lights and manhole covers in the state.”
