The Kano State Government has moved to tackle persistent water supply challenges in the metropolis with the award of N21.29 billion contracts for the rehabilitation of two major water treatment facilities and the restoration of critical distribution infrastructure.

The projects, approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, are expected to revive water production and improve access to potable water across Kano and surrounding communities.

Speaking during the signing of the contract agreements in Kano, the Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, said the intervention forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to restore decaying public utilities and strengthen water supply systems in the state.

He disclosed that the contracts were awarded to two Chinese construction firms for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants.

According to him, the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and restoration of its raw water pumping station were awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited at the cost of N9.9 billion.

Muhammad-Hashim added that the second contract, valued at N11.39 billion, was awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited for the rehabilitation of the Challawa raw water pumping station and water treatment plant, as well as the restoration of the Goron Dutse reservoirs.

The commissioner stressed the strategic importance of the projects, describing them as a major milestone in efforts to address longstanding infrastructure decay affecting water supply in the state.

He urged the contractors to ensure strict adherence to project specifications and complete the works within the stipulated eight-month timeframe.

“The rehabilitation of the two strategic water treatment plants represents a historic and major step in the administration’s broader efforts to revive critical public infrastructure, strengthen water production, improve distribution systems and access to potable water for residents of the state”, he said.

Muhammad-Hashim expressed confidence in the technical capacity of the contractors to deliver quality projects that would improve the efficiency and sustainability of water supply services.

He further noted that the rehabilitation works are expected to significantly boost water distribution across Kano metropolis and neighbouring areas, where residents have faced recurring shortages due to ageing infrastructure and operational challenges.
