ISWAP claims responsibility for Kuje prison attack

Troops intercept 2,000 rounds of ammunition in Birnin Gwari

The Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for the attack on Kuje Correctional Center late Tuesday night in Nigeria’s capital.

No fewer than 879 inmates escaped from the facility after the attack which left some inmates and security personnel dead.

The terrorists released a footage which is currently trending on social media showing how its members bombed and attacked the custodial centre. The Islamic State’s A’maq Agency released the video with the caption written in Arabic “Fighters of Islamic State attacked Kuje prison in Abuja yesterday and succeeded in freeing dozens of prisoners.”

Several fighters were seen marching in groups while vehicles and building were on fire in the 30-second video clip seen by BusinessDay.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari says he is disappointed in the intelligence system. Buhari, who wrote on his official twitter handle on Wednesday night said he is saddened and shocked by the attack.

“Saddened by the attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje. I am disappointed with the intelligence system. How can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it? I am expecting a comprehensive report on this shocking incident,” the president wrote.
