Here are 9 African countries that can now access Thailand’s e-visa

Thailand has introduced an electronic visa (e-visa) system, allowing citizens of nine African countries to apply online for various visa types which started January 1, 2025.

The e-visa platform eliminates the need for physical visits to Thai embassies. Applicants can submit documents, pay fees, and track application status online. Once approved, the e-visa is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport.

The e-visa system supports multiple visa categories, including:

1. Tourist Visas: For leisure travel.
2. Special Tourist Visas (STV): For long-term stays.
3. Transit Visas: For travellers passing through Thailand.
4. Non-Immigrant Visas: For purposes such as business, work, or education.
5. Diplomatic and Official Visas: For government or diplomatic personnel.

Single and multiple-entry options are available, depending on the visa type. The Privilege Entry Visa, available exclusively to Thailand Elite members, is not included in the e-visa system.

According to the Royal Thai Embassy, all visa applications must be completed online via the embassy’s official website. Physical applications will not be accepted.

The e-visa system reduces administrative procedures for travellers from eligible African countries. It eliminates the need to visit embassies in person, reducing costs and time.

The initiative is expected to foster trade and cultural exchange between Thailand and Africa. Businesses will have better access to explore opportunities, while cultural ties may strengthen through increased travel.

Travellers are advised to familiarise themselves with the e-visa process and prepare the necessary documents, including a valid passport, proof of accommodation, and financial statements.
