Imo State Government has invested over N4 billion in health sector as part of efforts to rehabilitate clinical faculties and procure medical equipment for the Imo State University Teaching Hospital in Orlu.
The Government has also move to attract professionals with proven record of local and international medical practice to the institution in order to assist Governor Hope Uzodinma-led Administration achieve its dream of turning the State to a medical tourism hub among the comity of States in the Country.
Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo State, who stated this at the weekend during the inauguration of the Board of the Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH) and the Imo State Universal Basic Education Board (IMSUBEB), described the health and education as critical sectors that directly impact on the life and well-being of the citizens.
In the health sector, Uzodinma noted that since the inception of his administration in 2020, he had made concerted efforts to restore and revamp the only State-owned tertiary hospital, IMSUTH in Orlu, which according to him, was earlier in comatose.
Saying with the huge investment being made at the teaching hospital, “the institution can stand among the league of effective teaching hospitals in the Country”.
He regretted that about 70% of deaths occurring in the Country were preventable, but due to poor or lack of good health care delivery system “much of such deaths would have been avoided with the presence of good primary, secondary and tertiary health care institutions”.
Meanwhile, Governor Uzodinma has encouraged the Emmanuel Ogueri, the Chairman, of the Board of IMSUTH and others to bring to bear their wealth of knowledge and experience in medical practice abroad, and replicate same to make Imo a centre for medical tourism.
