Flooding: FCTA mobilises rescue team ahead of heavy rainfall

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department, Abuja, has mobilised its search and rescue team in anticipation of heavy rainfall in parts of the FCT, which may result in flooding.

Florence Wenegieme, acting director-general of the department, on Monday in Abuja, said the preparation followed a flood prediction by the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre, under the ministry of environment, Abuja.

The FEWS Centre has forecasted the likelihood of heavy rainfall between July 21 and July 25, potentially leading to flooding in Mabushi District and Kurudu area of the FCT.

The agency urged the facility maintenance and management department to promptly desilt blocked manholes in Mabushi District to ensure the free flow of water during the expected heavy rains.

She called on the Abuja Environmental Protection Board to clear all blocked drainages and remove waste in the district to mitigate flood risks.

The acting DG emphasised the need for the Satellite Towns Development Department to clear blocked drainages and remove indiscriminately dumped solid waste in Kurudu.

“Residents should heed FEMD’s early warnings to ensure the safety of lives and property,” Wenegieme advised, adding that the public should use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of any disaster.
