Kayode AyinOluwa, senior cybersecurity expert has expressed concern about the increasing rate at which data breaches occur within the global health and insurance work space.
The healthcare industry is fast facing a growing threat to data breaches, he noted.
Speaking at a recent media briefing, he explained that that in 2023, over 50 million Americans were affected by health data breaches, resulting in significant financial losses and damage to patient trust.
He noted that the digital transformation of healthcare has created new vulnerabilities, which cybercriminals are exploiting.
“The proliferation of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices has increased potential entry points for attackers,” he said.
“Moreover, the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare diagnostics and insurance processing has introduced new threats,” he added.
AyinOluwa said to combat these threats, healthcare and insurance organisations should deploy innovative solutions that leverage cutting-edge technology.
“Advanced AI systems detect network anomalies and identify potential fraud in real-time.”
“Privacy-enhancing technologies, such as homomorphic encryption and blockchain, enable secure collaboration and data protection.”
He stressed that Blockchain technology is transforming digital identity and record-keeping in the healthcare sector.
He noted that this technology creates tamper-proof audit trails for medical records, streamlines insurance claims processing, and enables secure sharing of medical histories across providers.
AyunOluwa explained that industry collaboration is crucial for sharing threat intelligence and best practices.
“Organisations must implement robust AI security measures, deploy privacy-enhancing technologies, maintain strong supply chain security, and build resilient infrastructure.”
