Emir of Nasarawa urges unified action against climate change

The Emir of Nasarawa and former Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Jibril, has stressed the urgent need for collective action to address the growing challenges of Climate Change.

Speaking at a seminar in Abuja organised by Development Agenda and the Environment Media Correspondent Association of Nigeria (EMCAN), the Emir highlighted global environmental issues affecting Nigeria, such as land encroachment, oil pollution, deforestation, desert encroachment, and flooding.

He stressed the importance of understanding these challenges as long-term issues resulting from shifts in temperature and weather conditions, defining them as Climate Change concerns.
Ibrahim Goni, chairman of the National Park Service, echoed the call to combat Climate Change, advocating for tree planting initiatives and supporting media efforts to raise awareness.

The event was underscored as crucial by Paddy Ezeala, publisher of Development Agenda Magazine, especially in the context of the upcoming 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, highlighting the need to evaluate responses to environmental challenges.

UNIDO’s Programme Coordinator, Oluyomi Banjo, emphasized the essential role of media in communicating messages about Climate Change and called for leadership involvement to effectively address these challenges.

Amechi Chuks Oyema, chairman EMCAN, stressed the readiness of Nigeria for COP28 and the importance of media practitioners in highlighting actions taken to tackle Climate Change.

The imminent COP28 in the United Arab Emirates is set to unite the world to address global climate action, following decades of COP meetings aimed at determining climate measures and responsibilities, with the Paris Agreement being a pivotal outcome to limit global temperature increases and adapt to existing Climate Change effects.
