The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning regarding planned protests scheduled across the country in the coming weeks.

According to a statement released by Peter Afunanya, the director of public relations and dtrategic Communications at the DSS, these protests are being organized by individuals and groups who have yet to publicly identify themselves.

While acknowledging that peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right, the DSS said it has uncovered a troubling plot by certain factions to infiltrate and manipulate these demonstrations for violent purposes.

“The agency’s investigation reveals that the protests have political motives, with the intent to destabilize the federal and state governments, discredit them, and incite regime change at the national level”, Afunanya stated.

The DSS also said it has identified the funding sources, sponsors, and collaborators behind this plot.

“Instead of resorting to aggressive measures, the agency is employing non-violent strategies, including moral persuasion, stakeholder engagement, and diplomatic efforts, to prevent the realization of these harmful objectives,” Afunaya said in the statement.

“The DSS is calling on all protest groups to avoid any form of violence and to engage constructively with authorities.”

The agency emphasised that violence leads to loss of life and property and distracts from effective governance, encouraging protesters to express their grievances through peaceful means.

The secret police appealed to leaders from various sectors—including industry, labor unions, student associations, civil society, and religious organizations—to reject involvement in any orchestrated violence.

The DSS also urged parents, guardians, and heads of educational institutions to advise their children and students against participating in these planned protests.

“In coordination with other security and law enforcement agencies, the DSS will implement all necessary measures to ensure peace and order,” the DSS statement said.

“The public is encouraged to reach out to the DSS for information or assistance via their website at dss.gov.ng, email at [email protected], or by calling +2349153391309 and +2349088373514.”
