The Nasarawa State Police command has signed a peace accord with the leaders of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the Supreme Court judgement on the 2023 governorship election.
The signing of the peace accord took place Monday at the Command’s headquarters in Lafia
Umar Shehu Nadada, the state commissioner of police, vowed to deal decisively with anyone trying to cause chaos before, during, and after the judgement in the state.
“This is to ensure peace before, during, and after the Supreme Court judgement. It is also expected that the party leaders will bring this peace agreement to all their loyalists and supporters across the state.
“The joint security committee has also resolved to work together towards ensuring sustainable peace in the state. Whoever goes against this resolve, no matter how highly placed in society, will regret his or her action.
The CP, therefore, called on all those planning evil against the state to rethink.
“Information at the disposal of the command reveals that some faceless individuals are planning to stage violent protests in the state before, during, and after the Supreme Court verdict on the governorship election.
Nadada assured both the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the joint security forces would be neutral.
The peace accord was done in the presence of other security agencies in Nasarawa.
The APC was represented by the party’s state chairman, Aliyu Bello, and the APC state secretary, Yarus Dakusa, while the PDP was represented by the state organising secretary, Yahaya Bunu, the PDP state secretary, Adamu Bako, the woman leader, Hon. Stella Oboshi, and the PDP zonal chairman, Isa Sule.
Meanwhile, the state campaign office of David Emmanuel Ombugadu, the PDP governorship candidate and the PDP secretariat of the party were adorned with posters and party flags, as supporters of the party were seen trooping into the party for a vigil.
There is, however, palpable fear and tension in the state over the possible outcome of the Supreme Court judgement, as security operatives have taken over strategic places to forestall the breakdown of law and order in the state.
