Aké Collective, GIZ empower smallholder farmers

The Aké Collective recently partnered with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), on the implementation of an 18-month programme, tagged the ‘Happy Farmer, Happy Livestock’ community-led training programme.

“We always adopt a community-first approach when looking for ways to foster relationships with the communities we work with. This means we always ask and listen to their needs before implementing new ideas,” said Cobi-Jane Akinrele, founder/CEO, The Aké Collective.

According to Akinrele, the success of the community-led training programme inspires hope for regions plagued by inter-community conflicts. She stated that these conflicts disrupt daily life and pose a significant threat to food security, which is a critical concern to mounting food insecurity in the country.

She disclosed that the March 2024 Cadre Harmonisé food security analysis released by the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), projected that 26.5 million people in Nigeria are projected to face acute food insecurity between June and August 2024.

The data paints a stark picture of the profound effects of these conflicts on livelihoods, food security, and overall economic stability in the region.

Akinrele stated that fostering harmony between farmers and herders is important in the face of mounting challenges to food security. “Initiatives like this promote understanding, cooperation, and mutual respect, enabling communities to work together towards sustainable agricultural practices and ensuring a stable food supply for all”.

According to Akinrele, the collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is a testament to the transformative power of their shared vision in building a more resilient and prosperous future for all.

“We are deeply committed to creating strategic partnerships that empower these communities by creating sustainable opportunities and fair compensation for the farmers involved in the production and promotion of the superfoods we have come to love so much.”

According to Akinrele, the Aké Collective’s commitment to community empowerment, sustainable practices, and holistic well-being sets a shining example in the health and wellness industry. She disclosed that her dedication to making a positive difference in individuals and communities remains unwavering as the communities continue to grow and evolve.
