The management of Abuja Steel Company has firmly denied allegations that it is involved in the purchase and smelting of stolen manhole covers, describing the accusations as baseless and inconsistent with its core values and operational principles.
In a statement signed by Chethan Kumar, the company affirmed its commitment to ethical and transparent business practices and its strict adherence to industry regulations.
This follows an allegation by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) that it has identified an iron smelting company, the Abuja Steel Company, as one of the alleged receivers of stolen manhole covers.
According to the Steel Company, the allegations, which have circulated on social media and in some press reports, have been dismissed as unfounded by the company. The company emphasized that as a responsible, tax-paying organization, it has no history of involvement in illegal activities.
The company also reiterated its readiness to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to uncover the truth behind the theft and vandalism of public infrastructure. It expressed confidence that ongoing investigations would vindicate the organization and expose the actual culprits behind the criminal acts.
Addressing the matter, the company highlighted that it operates on a large-scale industrial framework and does not engage in small-scale transactions or negotiations with unauthorized individuals or agents. It described claims suggesting otherwise as false and misleading.
John Akanya, the company’s director, emphasized Abuja Steel Company’s status as a world-class organization and part of Nigeria’s largest steel production group.
He further stated that the company is transitioning from reliance on scrap metals to the use of direct reduced iron-ore sourced from its sister company, African Natural Resources and Mines Limited (ANRML), based in Kaduna State.
Abuja Steel Company disclosed that it has launched its investigation into the origin of the accusations to protect its reputation and ensure accountability. The company believes the allegations are part of a deliberate attempt by vested interests to tarnish its image.
In its statement, the company urged the public and its customers to disregard the claims, reaffirming its commitment to ethical practices and condemning all forms of vandalism and theft. It pledged continued contributions to Nigeria’s economic development and the safety of public infrastructure.
“Our company prides itself on being a cornerstone of responsible industrial practices in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond. We remain dedicated to contributing positively to Nigeria’s economic development and maintaining public trust,” the statement reads
