After earning a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Swartz went on to get a Master of Science in the same field from the University of Oklahoma.

He began working with Chevron in Louisiana in 1990 as a geologist and has since held positions of increasing responsibility in Angola and the United States.

Swartz is to succeed Richard (Rick) Kennedy, who has elected to retire after almost 40 years of service to the company.

Rick’s thoughtful and cooperative leadership as Chairman and Managing Director of the Chevron Nigeria/Mid-Africa Business Unit improved business outcomes.

As chairman of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), he spearheaded industry engagements on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and other industry initiatives, making contributions to the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

As the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), Rick showed a commitment to promoting regional socioeconomic development and peacemaking.
