Laterna Ventures Limited, leading book sales and distribution company as part of its contribution to inspire younger generation to embrace the culture of reading early organised a reading session for children from select schools in Lagos.
The event which was held in commemoration of the children day represents the company’s own response to foster an endearing love for books among young people in order to mould a generation of leaders who are readers.
Nnaji Ugbaja, head of corporate affairs unit, Laterna Ventures limited while speaking at the programme said the reading session is unique in the sense that beyond the reading, we are using this opportunity to expose the children to things that would give them overall development.
According to him, “This years’ children day celebration, Laterna ventures included art and craft to the reading so that the children can practise whatever they have read, adding that this is not a deviation from the essence of reading, but an expansion of the frontiers of learning”.
Ugbaja disclosed that five schools were involved in the reading session adding that in future the company is looking at expanding the reading sessions to two days to accommodate more schools and make the experience more enriching.
Deji Balogun, proprietor, Courteville preparatory school earlier said the partnership with Laterna involves organising reading sessions where children are encouraged to embrace reading early.
Balogun observed that lately, a lot children would rather watch television or play games, than reading which he said is almost extent.
He however said that by putting together this reading session, it is an approach that would help the children get excited about getting into the library, book store and wanting to read hard copy books, adding that children today just have to read.
He insists that bringing back the reading culture in children especially among children should be the function of all stakeholders and not just government.
According to him, “Parents should teach their children to love to read, once you get that orientation of loving to read, this would instil that culture of reading in the children”.
