Concerned about the recent huge recall of certain Toyota models in the country, the management of Toyota Nigeria Limited (TNL), operators of the Japanese brand franchise in the country, said Tuesday, that on the directives from Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, TNL has written all the eight accredited dealers under its umbrella to start furnishing it with any model that displays spiral cable assembly defect.

Addressing newsmen in Lagos on the issue, Kunle Ade Ojo, executive director, Toyota Nigeria Limited, explained that as far as Nigeria is concerned, there are few issues that have to be looked into that triggered off the recall that affected the Hilux model produced between 2005 and 2010 and RAV4 manufactured between 2006 and 2008.

The first thing, he said, had to do with spiral cable assembly on the steering Toyota Nigeria to fix models affected by global recalls free wheel, which handles the distribution of complex electrical  cables. He said in the process of turning the steering column as a result of constant driving overtime, there is possibility of the electrical component connections wearing out which could impact negatively on the steering wheel, horn and the airbag and result in the airbag not deploying in a crash.

The executive director assured every customer that bought Toyota vehicles from any of its dealers that, TNL is currently collating the vehicle identification numbers and chassis numbers of only the Hilux and RAV4 models involved only in the case of the Nigerian market.

While assuring the motoring public of TNL’s delivering of quality models, he said, “We have written to our dealers in this respect and where there is any of such models affected, all that we need to do is to dismantle the spiral cable and replace it with another one, at no cost to the customers.”
