MultiChoice to increase rates by 17% cites ‘Nigeria’s economic challenges’

Nigerians to pay more for DSTV as MultiChoice up prices, again

MultiChoice Nigeria has announced plans to implement an upward review of prices on its DStv and GOtv packages due to Nigeria’s rising economic challenges

“Due to the various economic challenges impacting our business operations, we have had to review the price of our packages to continue delighting our customers with great entertainment, anytime and anywhere,” MultiChoice Nigeria said in an internal memo.

According to the company, the new prices for MultiChoice Nigeria’s DStv and GOtv packages will be effective from May 1, 2023.

“Please note that from May 1, your monthly subscription (premium) will be N24,500. To retain your old price of N21,000 for up to 12 months ensure you are active by April 30,” the text message reads,” a text message to customers, seen by BusinessDay said.

With the fresh rate hike, the DStv Compact+ bouquet would move to N16,600 from N14, 250 monthly while subscribers on the Compact bouquet will pay N10,500 as against N9,000; while those on the Confam package will pay N6,200 compared to the previous N5,300.

Under the new price regime, viewers of DStv Yanga and Padi bouquets will pay N3,500 and N2,500 respectively, as against N2,950 and N2,150.

Meanwhile, subscribers on the GOtv Supa package will now pay N6,400 as against N5,500; with those on GOtv Max expected to pay N4,850 as against N4,150.

More so, the GOtv Jolli package price will increase to N3,300 from N2,800; while that of the GOtv Jinja and GOtv Lite will rise from N1,900 to N2,250; and from N900 to N1,100, respectively.

But despite the rate increases, MultiChoice Nigeria also made a price lock offer to subscribers who may renew their subscriptions before their due dates.

The offer, which is meant to cushion the effect of the price review, allows customers to pay the old rates for 12 months if they pay

Recall, in September 2020, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, MultiChoice Nigeria raised the monthly price of its Premium package from N16,200 to N18,400.

Other higher packages, such as Compact Plus and Compact, were also affected, with subscribers asked to pay N12,400 and N7,900 respectively.

However, to provide relief to its customers from the recession in Q4 of 2020 and the impact of the pandemic, MultiChoice Nigeria later slashed its prices on February 1, 2021.

The DStv HD decoder, dish kit with the Compact package subscription dropped from N18,600 to N9,900 on the Confam package, while the GOtv decoder, GOtennae with the GOtv Jolli package subscription went from N8,400 to N6,900.

But, in March last 2022, DSTV hiked its prices again due to economic challenges impacting its business operations.
