FG, states partner to increase police funding

Respite may have come the way of the police on Thursday as the Federal Government and the governors of the 36 states agreed to enhance the efficiency of the Nigeria police through increased funding.

Disturbed by the poor funding of the nation’s top security agency, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and deputy chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, who represented the governors, said the Federal Government has agreed to explore ways of increasing the funding of security agencies especially the Nigeria police to improve their operational capabilities.

Obi, who spoke after the meeting of the Interim Implementation Committee on Police Reform, expressed concern over current poor funding of Nigeria police and said government could not meet up to ten percent of the capital requirements of the police”.

The meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo was convened to discuss ways of raising additional funds for the police to enable the organisation perform its duties diligently.
