Buhari assures on strengthening the economy

Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that efforts are on at strengthening the nation’s economy in order to attract foreign direct investment.

This sounds like good news for not only the foreign investors, but also for local investors and sundry Nigerians who will be the ultimate beneficiaries of any investment in their land.

But the president who gave this assurance in his address to mark Nigeria’s 58th independence anniversary, did not explain how these efforts were being made, even as some direct investments already  in the country are feeling uncomfortable with unfavourable government policies.

The hardship and hunger in the land coupled with the slide in GDP growth cast doubt in the in the minds of Nigerians on president’s claim.

Buhari noted that the country was making steady progress in its democratic journey, but was quick to add that there was no quick-fix to developing a thriving democracy.

This is an admittance by the president that all was not well with the nation’s democracy 58 years after independence which is quite evident in many ways, especially with the faulty electoral process, candidates imposition, ballot box snatching, god-fatherism, vote-buying and other undemocratic practices that define democracy and democratic practice in Nigeria.

Despite the ongoing killings in the North East and other parts of Northern Nigeria, the president still believes that there has been improvement in the security situation in those areas, adding that efforts were being made to resolve the frequent killing by herdsmen which his government has chosen to brand farmers/herdsmen clashes.

Nigerians are yet to understand how two sets of people are said to clash but only one side, the farmers, die along with their women and children at home, not on the farm.

Buhari revealed how his government was helpless and clueless on the insecurity problem in the country when he solicited for ideas from Nigerians on how to deal with  that including terrorism and trans-border crimes.

In spite of the positive impact that technology is making on every sphere of life, Buhari still cautioned on responsible use of technology, especially the social media, forgetting that his party, the APC, deployed social media extensively to clinch power in 2015.
