It was a night of glowing tributes, fond memories, and heartfelt appreciation as friends, colleagues, industry leaders, and family gathered to honour Ken Aghoghovbia, Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer (DMD/COO) of the African Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re), at a grand retirement celebration held in Lagos recently.
The event, themed “A Legacy of Stability: 40 Years of Commitment & Impact”, marked the end of a career that spanned four decades and left a deep and lasting imprint on Africa’s reinsurance landscape.
Aghoghovbia, who joined Africa Re in 1985, rose through the ranks to become one of the most respected voices in the industry. His pioneering role as Regional Director for Anglophone West Africa, appointment as DMD/COO in 2011, and leadership in revitalising Africa Re’s Oil & Energy and Aviation Pools, were among many career milestones celebrated during the evening. Guests spoke glowingly of his strategic insight, operational excellence, and unmatched dedication to the Corporation’s mission.
Corneille Karekezi, Africa Re’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, lauded the outgoing executive with these words:
“Ken’s leadership has been marked by quiet strength, technical depth, and a rare ability to bring people together in pursuit of excellence. His legacy was one of enduring commitment, exceptional leadership and deep passion for growth of reinsurance in Africa.”
Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance/Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission of Nigeria, who is also a member of the Board of Directors of Africa Re, also paid tribute to Mr. Aghoghovbia:
“His was a legacy of stability, built on not just strategy, but on heart. Not just on policy, but on people. Mr. Aghoghovbia’s contributions have been central to Africa’s sustained growth and credibility in the global reinsurance space. He leaves behind a strong foundation and a sterling example of principled leadership.”
The evening featured a formal dinner, storytelling tributes from colleagues past and present, a digital exhibition, and the screening of a short documentary chronicling Aghoghovbia’s career and contributions to Africa Re and the wider insurance community.
In his remarks, Aghoghovbia expressed gratitude to his family, colleagues, and Africa Re’s leadership:
“It has been the honour of a lifetime to serve this great organisation. I am not retiring. I am stepping into a new chapter, quietly with no regrets, only deep gratitude. As I begin this new chapter, I remain deeply thankful for the opportunity to contribute to Africa Re’s journey.”
Among those in attendance were senior executives from leading insurance and reinsurance firms across the continent, regulatory leaders, past Africa Re Board members, and long-serving employees, many of whom shared personal stories of Aghoghovbia’s mentorship, leadership, and integrity.
Aghoghovbia retires leaving behind a legacy of operational excellence, visionary leadership, and an indelible mark on the African insurance and reinsurance sector.
