Wizkid, Tems, Fireboy get BET Awards nominations

Wizkid, Tems, and Fireboy DML were all nominated for this year’s BET Awards, with Wizkid competing in the male R&B/Pop Artists category against Chris Brown, Giveon, Lucky Daye, Blxst, and Yung Bleu.

Wizkid through his 2020 Album ‘Made in Lagos’ had put the Afrobeats artist on a global trend as the single ‘Essence’ was a favorite to international audiences including former US president Barack Obama. The remix featuring Justin Bieber solidified his status and has further put the Afrobeats artist mainstream among top R&B/Pop artists.

According to Joe Bubben, podcast presenter on the Breakfast Club, while interviewing rapper Nicki Minaj, he stated that more Grammy board members should recognize that Essence was the song of the year, a statement the Trinidadian-born rapper agreed to.

Tems also made history by becoming the first Afrobeats artiste to get 3 nominations in the same year for Best New Artist, Best International Act, and Best Collaboration for Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ remix featuring Justin Bieber.

Tems have in recent years gained popularity off the back of Essence but most recent after featuring on Future’s ‘I NEVER LIKED YOU’ album and being the first African artiste to debut at number one on Billboard hot 100, she continues to remain on the radar of top prestigious award and academy bodies.
