West African Cotton Limited, one of the leading seeding development companies in Nigeria, says it has concluded plans to establish a rice training institute in the commercial city of Kano.
The institute, which is to be sited in Chiromawa, in the outskirt of the metropolitan district of Kano, will be avenue for training rice farmers in the areas of rice cultivation as well as breeding.
The development is coming on the heels of a disclosure by the company that it has through its intermediary secured the sum of N155 million loan from UBA for some cooperative farmers in Katsina State.
Subirkumar Dey, general manager of the company, made this known during the free health camp programme organised by the company for the farming community in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State.
According to him, the resolve by the management of the company to set- up of the institute was borne out of the need to complement the efforts of the federal and the northern states’ governments to boost rice production.
He said the institute when it becomes functional would go a long way in grooming the required manpower in the area of rice production in the country.
Dey acknowledged the support farmers in the state have being giving to the company which has necessitated the peaceful and business friendly environment prevailing among stakeholders in state.
He noted with delight that the company which started some years ago as a cotton ginning entity has grown to become one of the two large scale seed production industries in Nigeria.
In the same vein, he stated also that the company has become one of the major suppliers of all agric inputs like fertiliser, chemicals, sprayers, tractors, as well as seed producer.
On the corporate social responsibility activities of the company, Dey said the company takes moral responsibility to reciprocate and give back to the society.
