The 14th World Forestry Congress is scheduled to hold in Durban, South Africa, between Sept. 7 and Sept. 11, 2015, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said in a statement.

The statement issued on Thursday in Tunis said the congress would be hosted by the Government of the Republic of South Africa in collaboration with the FAO.

The congress, the largest and most significant gathering of the world’s forest sector, comes every six years, and will be held in Africa for the first time.

The statement said that the objectives of the congress was to inform, orient  and influence international action in forestry with a view to elevating the sector’s role in global development, and project a new vision for the future.

It also said the 14th congress was crucial as the world enters a new development era with post-2015 sustainable development goals.

The congress is expected to clarify the need to recognise forestry as an integral part of sustainable development from local to national and international levels. It is also to identify, analyse and raise awareness on major issues facing the sector, and propose new forms of technical, scientific and policy actions that will result in greater sustainability.

The statement said the congress would also provide a platform for knowledge sharing among stakeholders, including decision-makers and forestry professionals.
