In a frantic effort to save the lives of Abuja residents, especially those who live at the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Lugbe, Chika, Aleita, Kuchugworo, Piakasa and other satellite towns along the Airport Road in Abuja, the House of Representatives has called for the immediate establishment of a general hospital within the axis.

Noting that the location of government hospitals in the city is a distance from the axis, which usually deny essential health services to the residents of those communities, and the rate of accidents and other ill-health related cases, which occur along the axis, the House figured that concerted efforts need to be taken to establish a general hospital within the area.

This followed the motion raised on the floor of the House by Yusuf Manu Swa, who expressed concern that the communities along the road are without a hospital to serve emergency situations along the axis.

Swa called for an urgent intervention.

“The absence of a general hospital along Airport Road has resulted in the death of many innocent people because of the distance to the city, where government hospitals are located. The establishment of a general hospital in Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Estate, Lugbe and/or any other settlement along Airport Road will meet the present need of the ever growing population.

“Until measurable steps are taken, like the establishment of a general hospital in FHA and/or any other settlement along the road, the rate of accidents and other ill-health related cases will be on the increase,” he said.

Also in his concern, Swa hinted that, “Most of the maternity cases arise in the late hours of the night, when motorists are not readily available, which makes it difficult for pregnant women to be transported for immediate treatment.”

He expressed worry that this situation has made health care delivery for residents along the Airport Road difficult as residents eventually lose their lives.

In its resolution, the House unanimously mandated its committee on health to immediately take steps to ensure that a general hospital is established at FHA.
