Man jailed 6 months for cheating

An Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State has sentenced a 28-year-old man, Ibrahim Salihu of Abacha Road, Mararaba, to a six-month jail term for cheating.

The police prosecutor, Steven Kwaza, told the court that the incident was reported by one Bello Mohammed of same address with the convict, at the Sani Abacha rd, Police Station on March 20.

Kwaza said the court that the complainant handed his Bajaj Motorcycle to the accused for commercial purposes.

“He was to be remitting the sum of N800.00 daily to the complainant as daily returns.’’

Kwaza added that Salihu had used the motorcycle for nine days, which amounted to N7,200

The police prosecutor said that he converted the money to personal use, which contravened Section 322 of the Penal Code.

The accused pleaded guilty to the one-count charge against him, and appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy.

The judge, Vincent Gwahemba, sentenced him to six-month imprisonment with an option of N4, 000 fine. He also upheld the application for compensation from the prosecutor, and ordered that the convict should pay an additional N7,200 to the complainant.
