Liberia Election: Boakai maintains lead over Weah in runoff election

In what is expected to be a hotly contested runoff election, former vice president Joseph Boakai has extended his lead over incumbent President George Weah.

According to the most recent data from the National Election Commission, Boakai now leads with 712,741 votes, or 50.58% of all votes counted. Weah is not far behind with 696,520 votes, or 49.42% of all votes counted.

The difference in votes between the two candidates has increased by 10,795 since Thursday, to 16,221 votes. Given that 5,107 of the 5,890 polling locations nationwide produced results, the majority of voting precincts may have submitted their findings.

Analysts note that Boakai’s consistent rise in the polls points to a broadening base of support, even while Weah retains a sizable lead in the vote. Analysts pointed out that with only a few polling places still to report, each and every vote will be extremely important in deciding the result of this fiercely contested race.
