Governors’ forum picks chairman today

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum will meet today to decide its chairman for the next two years as the presidency allegedly moves to stop Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State’s re-election as chairman.

Amaechi is seeking re-election as chairman of the forum but his protracted feud with the presidency has caused a division within the rank and file of the governors and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The 23 governors of the ruling PDP met yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with the national chairman of the party, Bamanga Tukur, and chairman of the board of trustees of the party, Tony Anenih, along with members of the National Working Committee of the party.

Ahead of today’s election, Ibrahim Shema, governor of Katsina State, has been anointed by the presidency and the party to take over from Amaechi but some of the northern governors are not comfortable with Shema’s choice.
