Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi on Tuesday appealed to doctors in the state to suspend their ongoing strike.

Elechi made the appeal in Abakaliki, saying that the strike was not in the interest of the state and the people.

The doctors withdrew their services in all government and private hospitals to protest the kidnap of their colleague on Sunday.

Pius Maiyike, a consultant paediatrician and member of the Nigeria Medical Association was kidnapped on Sunday by two men wielding AK-47.

“I want you to know that kidnapping is not targeted at your members, but, a national crisis.

“Even some developed countries with very improved security surveillance experience the phenomenon of kidnapping.”

“So, ours is not different. Nigeria is facing an unprecedented wave of security challenges,” he said.

Elechi said if the doctors continued to withdraw their services, the society would be worse for it.

He said the withdrawal of services was not the solution to the problem.
