Anambra Voters Forum (AVF), a group formed by non-partisan professionals in Anambra State, has set its target on mobilising at least 1.5 million voters in the forthcoming November 16 gubernatorial polls.
The group’s coordinator, Frank Belonwu Umeh, made this known in Awka, the state capital, while addressing journalists on the objectives of the association after a closed door meeting which lasted for about two hours.
According to Umeh, it was unfortunate that only 301,232 persons voted out of a total of 1,844,815 registered voters in the February 6, 2010 gubernatorial election in the state, representing a mere 16 percent.
He said apathy was one of the factors that led to the unpalatable situation, saying the group has initiated measures to ensure youths as well as old men and women come out to vote according to their conscience without undue influence from politicians and their agents in the coming election.
Secretary of the group, Chukwuebuka Ezechiedo, added that apart from the fact that all Anambrarians are presumed to be members of the group, there are registered members from all local government areas in the state who have sworn to ensure that Anambrarians shun violence, vote the right person and know the profiles of all their candidates before voting.
