Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that “progress” has been made in negotiations over a new deal to keep him at Anfield beyond this season.

The 33-year-old Dutch defender, alongside fellow stars Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is out of contract at the end of the current campaign — fueling ongoing speculation about their futures.

Asked after Liverpool’s 3-2 Premier League defeat to Fulham on Sunday if there had been any developments in the talks, Van Dijk said, “There is progress, yeah.”

Pressed further, he added, “Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see. I love the club, I love the fans, and they were there for us again (at Fulham). We wanted to reward them, but I asked them to be there again on Sunday and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”

Liverpool, who are closing in on their second Premier League title in six seasons, host West Ham at Anfield on Sunday. Jürgen Klopp’s side remains 11 points clear of second-placed Arsenal as they edge closer to the crown.

Despite the ongoing title chase, contract uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk, Salah, and Alexander-Arnold remains a key concern for supporters. Rumours linking Alexander-Arnold with a potential move to Real Madrid have also stirred emotions among fans.

Van Dijk, however, remains focused on the immediate task: winning the league.

“That’s definitely the mentality in our group — the job is not done,” he said. “Now we just have to recover from this physically and mentally and put our minds on West Ham at home.”
