Florentino Perez has been re-elected as Real Madrid president, securing around 65 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election and paving the way for Jose Mourinho‘s return to the Santiago Bernabéu as head coach.
Pérez defeated challenger Enrique Riquelme, who reportedly secured 35 percent of the vote, extending his tenure at the helm of the Spanish giants until 2030.
The victory triggers the confirmation of Mourinho as Real Madrid’s new manager after the Portuguese coach signed a three-year agreement last month that was contingent on Pérez retaining the presidency.
Pérez Secures Strong Mandate
The 79-year-old club chief has been one of the most influential figures in Real Madrid’s modern history. This marks the third time he has won a contested election, having previously triumphed in 2000 and 2004, while also being re-elected unopposed on four occasions.
Reports indicate Pérez dominated both the mail-in ballots and votes cast at polling stations, underlining his continued support among club members despite growing criticism following two trophyless seasons.
Speaking after his victory at Madrid’s Eurobuilding Hotel, Pérez promised supporters that the club would soon return to winning ways.
“I am still here, and I am here to defend Real Madrid,” Pérez said.
“We will continue working so that Real Madrid keeps winning titles, and we will fight until the end to achieve the 16th European Cup. You have demonstrated your commitment and loyalty to the club.”
Mourinho Set for Bernabéu Return
Mourinho’s appointment is expected to be formally announced in the coming days.
The 63-year-old leaves Benfica after guiding the Portuguese club to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga this season.
His return marks a second spell in charge of Real Madrid, having previously managed the club between 2010 and 2013. During that period, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup while helping restore the club’s competitiveness in Europe.
Mourinho will replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who took interim charge in January following Xabi Alonso’s departure.
Rebuilding After Trophyless Campaign
Real Madrid endured another disappointing season in 2025-26, finishing without silverware as rivals Barcelona secured the La Liga title.
With Pérez re-elected and Mourinho returning to the dugout, the club is preparing for a major rebuild aimed at restoring Real Madrid’s dominance in Spain and Europe.
