Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho has reportedly signed a contract to become the head coach of Real Madrid, marking a stunning return to the Spanish capital.

The 63-year-old reportedly finalised terms last week on a long-term deal that will run until June 2029.

Mourinho is understood to be the preferred choice of Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who triggered presidential elections at the club on May 12.

The elections are scheduled for June 7, with Mourinho expected to be formally unveiled after the process is completed.

Pérez Backs Mourinho Return

Pérez is facing opposition from renewable energy entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme, who recently told The Athletic that Mourinho would not have been his preferred candidate. However, Pérez is still widely expected to retain the presidency.

Preparations have already reportedly begun regarding Mourinho’s backroom staff and summer transfer plans ahead of the new season.

Benfica Exit Clears Path

Mourinho had earlier confirmed during a press conference that Benfica offered him a contract extension, but he preferred to wait until after their final match of the season, a 3-1 victory over Estoril on May 16, before deciding on his future.

Sources close to the situation indicated that Mourinho had already informed several people at Benfica of his intention to leave the club.

Benfica have since begun searching for a replacement, with Fulham manager Marco Silva reportedly leading the shortlist ahead of former Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim, who is believed to be uninterested in the role.

Real Madrid’s Preferred Candidate

Real Madrid were first linked with Mourinho earlier this month, with Pérez reportedly driving the move personally. Other managers considered by the club included United States coach Mauricio Pochettino, AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri, France national team coach Didier Deschamps and former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning three domestic trophies, including the 2011/12 La Liga title with a then-record points tally.
