The Football Association (FA) is set to determine if Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, brought the game into disrepute following his controversial comment on immigration last week.
The FA’s legal team is reviewing Ratcliffe’s comments to decide whether they meet the threshold for disciplinary action.
Possible outcomes include a formal charge for breaching FA rules, a written reminder of his responsibilities, or no action at all.
Political Backlash and Public Apology
Ratcliffe sparked widespread backlash after claiming in an interview that immigrants had “colonised” the UK, while citing inaccurate population data. The remarks drew condemnation from political leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who called on the billionaire to apologise, a request Ratcliffe later fulfilled.
Despite the apology, the FA is assessing whether to open a full investigation. In the meantime, concerns have grown over the reputational damage to Manchester United.
Commercial Concerns and Club Distancing
Reports indicate the Glazer family have expressed unease about the potential impact of the controversy on the club’s commercial relationships and sponsorship portfolio.
Although Ratcliffe received support in some quarters for raising the issue of immigration during his interview with Sky News, Manchester United issued a strongly worded statement reaffirming the club’s “inclusive and welcoming” values.
While Ratcliffe was not mentioned by name, the statement was widely interpreted as a public distancing from the co-owner and was reportedly approved at the highest level within the club.
Earlier, Ratcliffe had said he was “sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern, but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.”
The FA’s decision is expected to clarify whether the controversy will escalate into formal disciplinary proceedings.
