Meet Usha Vance, daughter of Indian immigrants now US Second Lady

On January 20, 2025 Usha Vance made history as the first Indian- American to become the second Lady of the United States of America. A significant milestone in the representation of immigrants in the US and  the growing diversity and inclusivity in U.S. leadership and possibility.

Early Life and Education

Usha Vance, 39, was born Usha Chilukuri, in California to Indian Telugu Parents who migrated to the US from Andhra Pradesh, India.  Her father is a mechanical engineer father and her mother a molecular biologist

 Raised with a strong emphasis on education and cultural values, Usha excelled academically she pursued her undergraduate degree at Yale University, where she graduated Summa cum laude with a major in history. She earned a Mphil in early Modern History from Clare College Cambridge, UK  before returning for law degree from Yale Law School. 

Personal Life and Career

While at Yale Law School, Usha met her husband, J.D. Vance when they joined a discussion group on “social decline in white America”. He is now the Vice President of the United States. They got married in Kentucky in  2014 in an interfaith ceremony as Vance is Christian while Usha is Hindu.

They have  three children: two sons, Ewan and Vivek, and a daughter, Mirabel and reside in Washington, D.C.

Professionally, Usha Vance has established herself as a respected attorney, specializing in appellate litigation.
