Germany saw the highest annual average last year of people employed since reunification in 1990, as the number of people on the job rose to 45.9 million, the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday in a preliminary estimate.

The number of employed people rose again by 0.7 percent from the record achieved in 2022.

Following the coronavirus-related slump in 2020, employment has thus grown for the third year in a row.

The data office said people in Germany participated more in the labour force and additional workers came from abroad.

The total German workforce is 47.1 million, which includes 1.3 million unemployed, the office said.

Nine out of 10 of the additional jobs were created in the service sector, up 0.9 percent, while there was less growth in manufacturing, which was up 0.3 percent. Construction rose by 0.6 percent.

In agriculture, forestry, and fishing, the negative trend of previous years continued with a further decline of 0.4 percent.

The number of self-employed people fell for the 12th year in a row. Their number dipped by around 30,000 people or 0.8 percent from the previous year to 3.9 million. (dpa)
