The United Kingdom Government has appointed Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria.

The appointment was announced by the UK Government on Monday, with Vowles set to assume office in Abuja in September 2026.

According to a statement by British High Commission on Tuesday, this development signals a continuation of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two countries across trade, development, and security.

He will succeed Richard Montgomery, who has served as the UK’s top diplomat in Nigeria and will remain in post until Vowles formally takes over.

“Vowles arrives in Nigeria with a wealth of diplomatic and development experience accumulated over decades of service within the UK’s foreign and development institutions.

“Most recently, he served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2023 and 2026, following an earlier posting as Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.

“His career has also included senior leadership roles within the UK’s foreign and development architecture.

“He served as Transformation Director and Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories within the UK’s diplomatic service, contributing to policy formulation and the management of international development programmes across multiple regions”, the statement reads.

According to the Commission, before rising to ambassadorial positions, Vowles built extensive field experience through assignments in several developing countries.

“His international development work took him to Bangladesh, India, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya, where he worked on development and governance-related initiatives.

“He began his professional career in Zimbabwe, focusing on education and development programmes, experiences that helped shape his long-standing engagement with international development and diplomatic relations”, it added.

Vowles described Nigeria as a country of strategic significance to the United Kingdom and expressed optimism about advancing cooperation between both nations.

“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security,” he said.

The appointment comes at a time when Nigeria and the United Kingdom continue to expand collaboration in key sectors, including economic development, investment, security cooperation, education, climate action and governance reforms.
