IGP orders arrest of Senator who assaulted nursing mother, as Senate commences probe

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the police to arrest Senator Elisha Abbo and his police orderly for allegedly attacking a salesgirl, at an Abuja sex toy shop even as the Senate has commenced investigation on the matter.

 This was even as  Federal Capital Territory police had commenced an investigation into the matter by a  team set up by the Police Force headquarters in Abuja, to unravel the matter, which was said to have embarrassed the police authorities.

The lawmaker’s alleged assault on the woman, who is a nursing mother, went viral after a video recorded by the Close Circuit Television (CCTV), installed in the shop was shared on the social media, an act that attracted nationwide protests.

 The Police also frowned at the conduct of the police orderly attached to the lawmaker, adding that the authorities are doing everything within their powers to address the matter and restore dignity to the force.

Police sources said the incident occurred in a sex-toy shop in Abuja, where the PDP senator from Adamawa state had gone to make purchases.  In the viral video,  an angry Senator Elisha was seen beating up the sales girl, after which he ordered his police orderly to take her away. It was not yet clear what the woman did to attract such assault.

President of the Senate Ahmed Lawan also said on Wednesday that the upper legislative chamber would investigate the matter and find a way to address the matter.

In another development, former Vice President and the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, has also condemned the act of by the lawmaker and asked him to submit himself to the police.

Atiku said in a statement on Wednesday that the law must take its course.
