Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly in talks to take over as head coach of Turkish club Besiktas.
If appointed, this would mark the 51-year-old Norwegian’s first managerial role since his departure from United in 2021. Besiktas, currently sixth in the Turkish Super Lig, parted ways with Dutch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November.
Speaking to the media at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, Solskjaer expressed enthusiasm about the potential opportunity.
“I am very happy to be here. It is great to have so many people here for this great club. We have had our first meetings. I am looking forward to starting my job. It is great to be in this great city.”
Solskjaer’s managerial career gained prominence when he replaced Jose Mourinho as Manchester United’s interim boss in December 2018. His early success earned him a three-year contract in March 2019. During his tenure, he led the club to a second-place finish in the Premier League and a Europa League final but was dismissed in 2021 following a poor run of form, leaving without securing a trophy.
Before his time at United, Solskjaer managed Norwegian club Molde in two separate stints and had a brief spell at Cardiff City.
As a player, Solskjaer achieved legendary status at Manchester United, scoring 126 goals over 11 seasons (1996–2007), including the iconic winner in the 1999 Champions League final.
If the deal is finalized, Solskjaer will face the challenge of reviving Besiktas’ fortunes and guiding them up the Super Lig table.
