You don’t need coding skills for these 5 tech careers

The tech ecosystem in Nigeria is growing and the surge in new products and services means that the appetite for specialised talents is also rising.

Apart from working within the startup ecosystem, tech talents are also being hired in different industries including the financial services sector, oil and gas, advertisement, Nollywood, power sector, government, and many others. Talent hubs like Tek Experts, Andela, and Decagon have built huge companies outsourcing tech talents to companies in different sectors of the Nigerian economy.

An expert explained that some of the reasons companies hire Nigerian techies include “timezone, English language is native, Nigerians adapt super fast to most work environments, hardwork and competition are somewhat woven into the average Nigerian. The next best time to get into tech in Nigeria is today.”

Unfortunately, most people without coding skills think they are not qualified to work in the tech ecosystem. We have put together four career paths in tech that do not require coding skills. They are also lucrative.

Customer support success

This is a critical position for almost all tech companies. Although customer support is also important in other industries, for tech customer support could be the last line between losing to competition and succeeding. The tech industry is all about new gadgets, products, and services that require getting used to. Without sufficiently informed tech support, customer acquisition could be difficult.

Tech companies can’t afford grumbled customers who have been made to hold their calls for over an hour without any solution. Fast and to-the-point solution (via any) medium is the answer.

In recent times, tech companies are increasingly integrating innovations like online forums, detailed and self-sufficient FAQ pages, and automated chatbots in customer support. This has many customer support staff on edge and thinking whether the machines are finally here to take their jobs. But the reality is customer or support has evolved from call centre agents. In fact, modern customer support refers to the act of providing timely, empathetic help that keeps customers’ needs at the forefront of every interaction. They are the face of the company and in most companies, they are given a seat at the table when it comes to decision making because they play a critical part in sales and word-ofmouth marketing.

Content writing, editing, and copywriting

Many successful tech companies have dedicated content writers, editors, etc whose job it is to distill the products and services the company produces into digestible information that can be shared with different audiences.

“Many Nigerian companies including investment firms are hiring writers and editors now. Their focus is thought leadership and – for consumer-facing firms – helping people understand how an industry works. In a way, they’re developing media arms with varying degrees of intensity,” said Idris Abubakar, Lagos-based writer for Rest of World.

Content writers and editors enable tech startups to get the boost they require to catch up with other existing companies or startups that have had a headstart over them.

Programs management This is a senior management position and to excel in it you may require a background in project management.

Program management refers to a strategic oversight function responsible for the consistent delivery of largescale initiatives. Programs consist of multiple individual projects, which are typically managed discretely by project managers.

A program manager is expected to maintain a strategic plan and schedule for their programs, inform and advise stakeholders, review the status and progress of each project, mentor project managers, and safeguard the quality of each project plan and its deliverables. Program managers have a rounded perspective of projects and they evaluate the larger context of the combined organisational impact with the interdependencies by leveraging system thinking.

Law and regulations international

Tech companies often find themselves on the wrong side of regulation or operating in segments where regulation is still trying to catch up. That is where the services of a legal professional come in.

In-house technology lawyers have the legal expertise as well as a sound understanding of the products being developed and how the business wants to exploit them. However, they don’t have to do it all.

Technical recruitment and hiring manager

This is an HR role. A Hiring manager is responsible for hiring an employee, or employees, to fill open positions in an organisation. While hiring managers are typically from the hiring department in the company, they often serve as the new hire’s future supervisor.

Hiring managers are expected to identify top tech talents in the least possible turnaround time, recruit them and ensure they are retained in the company. Hence, the task of a hiring manager continues as long as the tech hire is in the company.

And because the task of hiring ideal candidates is time-consuming and requires a great amount of teamwork, recruiters and hiring manager often have to collaborate toward a common goal of recruiting the best talent in the shortest possible amount of time.
